Apple announces PowerPC upgrade plans for Workgroup Servers
LAS VEGAS, Nevada-- October 19, 1993 -- Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced it would offer PowerPC microprocessor upgrades for its
current line of Apple Workgroup Servers. With this announcement,
Apple extends its commitment to provide PowerPC processor upgrades to
all three models of the Apple Workgroup Server. Apple currently
plans to incorporate the powerful RISC-based microprocessor, designed
in conjunction with IBM and Motorola, into its line of Macintosh
personal computers and servers beginning in the first half of 1994.
Announcing the upgrade plan at Apple's Worldwide Sales Conference in
Las Vegas, Nevada, Morris Taradalsky, Apple Business Systems (ABS)
vice president and general manager, said owners of Apple Workgroup
Server 60, 80 and 95 will have the option to upgrade to PowerPC
processor based systems running a version of the Macintosh System 7.0
operating system for the PowerPC processor. The current Workgroup
Server 60, 80 and 95, based on the Motorola 68040 microprocessor, are
planned to continue to be offered along with PowerPC platforms.
Taradalsky also said enhancements were planned for the popular Apple
Workgroup Server 95, running A/UX, Apple's version of UNIX with a
Macintosh user interface, to further boost performance and expansion.
Apple also plans to provide an upgrade path from the Workgroup Server
95 to even higher performance, UNIX-based servers utilizing a PowerPC
processor.
By providing an upgrade path both for Macintosh System 7.0 Workgroup
Server 60 and 80 as well as the A/UX-based Workgroup Server 95, Apple
believes that customers will have a range of robust, scalable and
flexible client/server solutions, further enhancing the return on
their Apple Workgroup Server investment.
"Apple intends to ensure that its Workgroup Server customers have a
smooth transition to PowerPC technology by providing a clear hardware
and operating system upgrade path," said Taradalsky. "ABS intends to
provide PowerPC platforms that protect and extend systems customers'
investments. By keeping the 68040 processor systems in the line, we
plan to have a wider range of hardware and operating system options
for customers from which to choose."
Upgrade Strategy
Specifics on the various upgrade options should be made available
when PowerPC microprocessor Workgroup Server products are announced.
"Our aim in providing these PowerPC processor upgrades is to protect
customers' investments in client/server applications." said Jim
Groff, senior director for LAN systems with Apple's ABS Division.
"We intend to retain a high degree of compatibility with existing
Workgroup Server applications. Apple is also working closely with
key developers to ensure their applications will take advantage of
PowerPC performance."
ABS plans to produce versions of the AppleShare file and print server
software, AppleTalk Remote Access and its recently announced
AppleSearch product that will run on its PowerPC processor-based
servers, Groff said.
Improved Performance
PowerPC offers performance improvements over current CISC-based
microprocessors and competitive offerings. This new level of
performance translates into improved speed, enhanced scalability and
reliability for mission critical applications. In May, at the Apple
Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple demonstrated for the first
time a prototype PowerPC processor based system.
Over time, Apple plans to offer a full range of products based on
PowerPC, from entry-level to high-end Macintosh personal computers
and servers. The new computers will offer developers and customers
high performance and a variety of new features at competitive prices.
